Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
