Pom Klementieff
Pom Klementieff was born 3 May 1986. She
was a student at the Cours Florent drama school, Paris. She has been in movies
such as Loup 2009, Sleepless Night 2011 and Hacker's Game 2015. She portrays
the role of Mantis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the
Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame
(2019). Pom Klementieff was born in Quebec City, Canada, to an Korean mother
and a French-Russian father who was employed in the city as a consul for the
French government. Eugene Klementieff was her grandfather. Her parents picked
the name "Pom" because it's identical in pronunciation to Korean
words for "spring" and "tiger". Klementieff lived in Canada
for one year before her family travelled extensively because of her father's
job. They resided in Japan as well as the Ivory Coast, before settling in
France. Her father was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 5 and her mother
suffered from schizophrenia and was unable to care for children as a result,
and Klementieff was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt. Her uncle, whom she
described as "like [her] second father" died on her 18th birthday, as
did her older brother, who was killed just seven years after, this time on her
25th birthday. Klementieff briefly attended law school after the death of her
uncle in order to appease her aunt but did not find the career choice
attractive. She was also a waitress and saleswoman in France. She began acting
when she was 19years old at the Cours Florent theatre school in Paris. It was
only a few months in her studies when she was awarded an acting contest which
gave her two years of tuition with the best teachers at the school. Klementieff
was the first actress to perform professionally in the independent French film
Apres lui (2007). She played the step-daughter of the protagonist, Catherine
Deneuve. Three days were spent filming her scenes. In one scene, Klementieff
was to be pushed down a flight of stairs but accidentally fell down the stairs
herself, and director Gael Morel kept that shot in the film. Loup (2009) was
her first lead role in a film. It is a French movie about a tribe in Siberian
mountain reindeer herders. Klementieff filmed for hours at an isolated camp
away from the closest village. Temperatures dropped to minus zero while
filming.
