Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez who was hairdresser. As a child, she was an obsessive performer who would recreate commercials on television for the enjoyment of her family. However, she chose to concentrate on dance. After nine years of ballet classes in Spain's National Conservatory she was able to continue her studies under the direction of several prominent dancers. She realized her passion at the age of 15 when she defeated more than 300 girls at an audition for a talent agency. The contract that resulted in her being signed secured her roles in a variety of Spanish television shows as well as music videos. This in turn led to a future career on the screen. Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). She then briefly was in Framed (1992) in a Timothy Dalton thriller. The third film she starred in, Belle Epoque (1992) was an Oscar-winning movie in which she was one of four sisters who were competing to win the love of an attractive deserter army soldier. The film received numerous Goyas, Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards. Cruz became a prominent Spanish actor with her three to four films per year that she added to her resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her luck changed dramatically in 1998 when her movie-industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) was awarded the Best Actress Goya. After several more attempts at film in the English language Cruz's first international breakthrough was Almodovar’s All About My Mother (1999), where she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun. Cruz found herself very popular on both sides of the Atlantic due to her film winning numerous awards and accolades. Woman on Top (2000) was her next major project.
